Korea’s First Mass-Produced Rice Noodles 2026-01-05 |

“The very first product we chose to challenge was rice noodles. At the time, the idea of making noodles from rice was almost unimaginable.” When aging government rice sat unused in storage facilities, Chairman Neung-gu Lee asked a simple but bold question: Could this rice be turned into noodles? After countless trials and failures, he succeeded in developing rice noodles and went on to persuade the government to establish a distribution system that utilized surplus rice stocks.
This innovation stimulated domestic rice consumption and laid the foundation for Korea’s rice-based processed food industry. In recognition of these contributions, Chairman Lee was awarded the Stone Pagoda Order of Industrial Service Merit in 1990— one of Korea’s highest presidential honors for industrial advancement— and later received the Order of Civil Merit, Seokryu Medal in 2001 for his contributions to national development.
What was once destined to be discarded became the cornerstone of a national industry— an achievement born from the unwavering determination of a single individual. |
